Is Work Killing Me? – Wii in an Unhealthy Workplace
As an international jet setting Pasty Muncher I have been fortunate to be able to work around the world. Being a self appointed Pasty Reviewer has had its advantages – lots of freedom but alas little fortune. I am grateful for the opportunitiies that have come my way but over the past few years I’ve been confined to a “proper job” in the South West – stuck in an office.
Now don’t get me wrong – I love my job (ahem the Managing Director just breezed past whilst the header Is Work Killing Me? was in full view on screen) – but I can’t help passing comment on the down hill path the company in its attitude to serendipity and health has taken in recent times.
Fun and Games to Keep Fit
A policy to allow video games has always been in place. Originally my colleagues clamoured to take the play station controls to test their nerve and skill fiddling around on pointless platform games then last Christmas great excitement as someone managed to pre-order and successfully buy a Nintendo Wii. The bundle came with a variety of wii games and soon the wii playing became a very time consuming occupation – I still don’t see it on our timesheet system.
For someone who reflects back on Space Invaders as being the ultimate video game the sight of seeing four grown men sat in a darkened room holding teeny weeny steering wheels acting out the movements of driving Mario Kart or a Land Rover Sport Freelander in one of the many Nintendo Wii driving games was very surprising.
Wii Fit Fever
Now the latest craze is hopping about trying to keep up with the moves on the Wii Wii Fit game. reports that playing wii fit actually does increase fitness and improve health are widespread – even authority healthcare sites view wii fit as a favourable pastime see this Your BP post about the positive health benefits by lowering blood pressure playing wii games.
Healthy Food Fresh Fruit for All
Along with the exceptionally good coffee (which i am pleased to report remains) fresh fruit was freely available in the kitchen – supplied by a local greengrocer who selected local seasonal products (apples a plenty) whenever possible and ensured that the fruit was at least half ripe – unlike the rock-hard efforts that the cost cutting supermarket which usurped him supplied.
Now the fruit bowl remains on the counter – its once gleeming shine populated with bananas, kiwis, pears and seasonal citrus fruit – now a sorry dusty coat.
Now in an attempt to return to the bygone generous day we have Bacon Butty Friday and sadly even though the maths dont add up there is no fruit alternative.
One of my first jobs involved mixing with the trailer trash of Crawley in and industrial estate serving Gatwick Airport. I was horrified at the windowless, airless, badly lit office with low ceiling and dreary staff. It occured to me that the state of the workplace conditions must have a marked effect on worker’s health, so with this in mind perhaps I should be more grateful for my place of work – it still has great coffee and is close to some of the best pasties in the world!

Yeah i agree lot of work create a lots of pressure. You area lucky that you can travel so many areas. I think that is a wonderful opportunity to introduce new ones. I love to read your post. Thanks for sharing this in your post with us.
I think you’re right – workplace can have a huge difference on your productivity and overall health. I can;t imagine working in an office without daylight – I think I’d go nuts!
Sometimes it is and sometimes it doesn’t. Maybe depends on your day activities that would affect your work.
Work killing me! That is for sure! I know it
Work is killing me!! strongly agreed, but Wii, thats just for fun, not going to be any real activites
Well i read you own a wii fit to ? It’s damn cool heh ?
Like snowboarding on the wii is so fun with friends.
We had a Wii where I worked last October, that was quite fun on lunch breaks and kept office moral up. I used to love Rayman Raving Rabbits.
The International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) has released results of a new survey into exercise and video games, finding that technologies such as Nintendo’s Wii “may prove to be just what fitness experts are looking for to help their clients get more active”
I just got a nintendo wii a couple of months ago, and since I live where I work i always play it on my lunch break. My girlfriend is talking me into getting the wii fit as I have heard it can raise your HR and you can actually lose weight playing it, I am still a bit skeptical about it though.
I wish I could set up a small TV and my old nintendo in my cubicle. that would be awesome! Nothing like spending the lunch hour playing a little super mario brothers 3!
we too has a wii console on work and it’s relaxing a bit
i think that, if you own a wii at your work, then your boss might not like it, imagine playing wii for hours and not doing your work! it’s relaxing but in the same time too much fun at work!
I agree, work is killing me too. A Wii would be a great idea. In Europe, I know some countries have like mandatory 4 weeks off, we get 2 here. We need a Wii at work to make things a bit lighter, or a siesta, haha
I think now a days life of every one of us has become stressful as compared to what it used to be earlier. I don’t know what is the reason. Why every one of us are so tensed and stressed.
I just got a Wii and I love it! I love the Wii fit! I get to work out in a fun way and it tells me how much weight I’ve lost. There are so many fun games you can play with people from all ages.
A pretty cost-effective way of keeping our employees’ morale up and their bodies in shape.
I agree you need a way to vent from the pressure of work, and a wii is a great way, but my work won’t purchase one, but we do have a pool table, and it really helps us to take one of breaks and have some old fashion fun with a game of pool.
Nintendo Wii have brought opon a new era of gaming, it’s not just gaming it’s working out at the same time. For people who stay alot indoors. it’s a very useful device!
The Nintendo Wii is a great tool for aiding your fitness plan. However it is important to remember that it should not replace a proper fitness workout, get out and running in lunch breaks!
i forgot the days i played wii at work, now its just sitting on the shelf since we got new manager and he’s very strict
